International Wheelchair Athletics Competition
Early summer this year saw the return of elite wheelchair athletics to the home of disability sport - Stoke Mandeville Stadium - with the Harpers International Wheelchair Athletics Competition 2009. The event was one of the finest on the European circuit, with athletes being attracted from around the world.
Mike Wood, Chairman of the British Wheelchair Athletics Association, said “After the success of the inaugural International in 2007, it is great to see elite wheelchair athletics back at Stoke Mandeville Stadium – the home of wheelchair sport - following on from Team GB’s successes in the Paralympics in Beijing. As well as creating an elite athletics event at the home of disability sport, we want to continue to inspire youngsters and those recently injured back into sport”.
Kevin Yates from Leisure Connection said: “We were delighted to sponsor this prestigious event and to continue to show our support of wheelchair sport here in the UK. The weekend was a fantastic event and one that will showcase some of the most talented athletes in Europe performing at the wonderful facilities we have here at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium”.
