In 2009, Harpers Health and Fitness at Wyboston benefited from a £250k refurbishment, which included significant investment in technology to reduce energy consumption. A new lighting scheme was installed with a sensor control to limit wastage as well as low energy LED lighting. Staff training was also delivered.
This investment, coupled with a change in colleague management of the site has resulted in a 30% reduction in electricity usage since project completion, whilst also enhancing the atmosphere for gym members and reducing re-lamping and maintenance costs. In 2010, Downham Health & Leisure Centre implemented a successful campaign to reduce energy consumption. The nature of the facility is very different from other centres within Leisure Connection’s estate as it is a partnership enterprise with the local NHS trust, library and Council administration teams, all of whom utilise the building.
The aim was to achieve a lower base rate of usage during the night-time hours. It was found that timer clocks were being managed by a temperature control, which was burning a great deal of unnecessary energy. The centre now burns zero gas overnight. A further investment of £25k was made into pool covers, which has contributed towards an 8% overall reduction in gas consumption.
