St Albans launches its Community Sport Network
St Albans Community Sport Network - One Voice for Sport Locally
The St Albans Community Sport Network will be launched in November as part of Sport England's objective of having a single system for sport covering the whole country - linking grass roots physical activity and sport through the district, county and regional bodies. Allowing information and funding to be passed along the single system of sport in both directions.
If you are a local sports club or part of a sport & health related organisation this is your chance to have your say in how £15,000 - £30,000 can be spent to develop sporting opportunities in the City & District of St Albans.
CORE outcomes of a CSN:
· Raise participation level within sport and physical activity year on year
· Widen access to opportunities for sport and physical activity
· Bring together and align partners existing priorities and targets within one joined up local plan for spot and physical activity based upon the needs of St Albans
We are holding a consultation event on Monday 24th September to canvas local opinion on how we structure the Network and what our action plan will focus on.
If you would like to be involved in this process or require more information please call Chris on 01727 827667 or email on saash.sports@leisureconnection.co.uk for an information pack.
Active People Survey
1. What is the Active People Survey
The Active People Survey is the largest single survey of sport and active recreation ever undertaken in Europe and provides more detail on sports participation than any previous research. It was commissioned by Sport England and has been carried out by Ipsos MORI at a total cost of over £5million.
It provides statistical information about the levels of participation in sport and active recreation in England. It includes robust data for all 354 local authorities across the country, providing a picture of participation by local authority area for the very first time. The survey also gives a breakdown of levels of participation in different sports and the proportion of people volunteering to support sport.
A total of 364,501 surveys were completed, with each Local Authority area having a minimum sample of 1,000 people (excluding Birmingham which had slightly more and Isle of Scilly which had 500 - both adjustments were made due to the size of the respective areas). These numbers were required to ensure robustness and reliability across all Local Authority areas.
2. What will it be used for?
The Active People Survey gives us a detailed picture of participation in sport across the country - by geographical area, age group, sex, and ethnicity, along with a wide range of other socio-demographic information. This provides Sport England, local authorities and other partners with a new and accurate baseline measure for levels of participation in sport and active recreation, and volunteering.
The survey results provide an opportunity to highlight the impact of inactivity on health, for the individual and the nation and launch a call to action, encouraging more people to get active through sport. The survey is also a platform for all partners to highlight the role that sport and active recreation can play as part of the drive to combat obesity and improve health.
National Participation Rates - 21%
East Region Participation Rates - 20.5%
St Albans Participation Rates - 26.8%
These initial results put the City & District of St Albans as the most active area in the East Region and the ninth most active area in the country.
