22 June 2007
Beach huts for the 21st century are the subject of an exciting new exhibition at The Hub National Centre for Craft & Design, Sleaford.
Excellent for getting you in the holiday mood, Bathing Beauties opened with a bang on the 14th June. Over 300 guests enjoyed a real seaside theme - including a traditional Punch and Judy show and ice cream!
Running until the 2nd September, the exhibition redesigns Britain's well-loved beach hut for today's beach lovers.
Over 100 different models are featured, including the 'Jabba'
beach hut which wouldn't look out of place on a Star Wars set,
being a 21st century cave of laminated wood and glass!
'Oyster Pleasance', a life-sized hut, is also featured which
visitors can sit inside and enjoy.
Phil Cosker, Hub Director, said: "This was a successful and exciting opening at the Hub, with over 300 excited and enthusiastic attendees.
"Designers with international reputations have joined in this exhibition - and guests from the Netherlands, Ireland and even America attended the opening."
Continuing the seaside theme, visitors to The Hub were given the chance to hear the artist behind the exhibition at an evening lecture. On the 21st June, Michael Trainor gave an intriguing and revealing talk about Giant Parrots, Beach Huts and Unexploded Bombs!
The talk formed part of a new series at The Hub, in partnership with the Royal Society of the Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (RSA).
Always keen to inspire young people, The Hub also invited
Lincolnshire youngsters to take part in a design workshop based
around Bathing Beauties. 60 young designers joined architects to
design beach huts for the 21st century.
